Common Signs that You Need To Get Your AC Fixed

air-conditioner-repairsThe main reason you get an AC system is for comfort purposes. This means the moment you start experiencing discomfort, chances are your AC is having a problem. Most HVAC units have a lifespan of 12 years on average and at times they do fail even way before the expiry of this duration mostly because of lack of proper preventive maintenance. The good news is many nuisances are much easy to fix as long as you understand the cause behind them.

The AC Doesn’t Turn On

The likely reason for this is that the thermostat may not be set correctly or power isn’t reaching the unit. To fix this, ensure your thermostat is set to cool or AC and see to it that the temperature setting is correct and the battery is still functional. You can also have a look at the circuit breaker because it could be a case of a tripped fuse.

The Comfort Level has Drastically Reduced

Airflow is the most important element to comfort and the moment you feel uncomfortable, the problem could be something to do with the airflow. To fix this, you have to change the filter which should be the case on a regular basis if you have a maintenance plan, if you live with pets or there are lots of people in the house, the filter should be changed oftentimes between 30 and 60 days. On the outdoors, you should ensure that there are at least 24 inches of clearance on both sides of the unit as well as 5 feet of clearance on top of the unit. Obstruction to the registers and cold air returns must also be inspected and removed to enhance the airflow.

Abnormal Rise in Utility Bills

Operating costs normally go up when the unit starts becoming inefficient. If you have checked and replaced the filters as directed above, the other section you may want to check is the condensing coil. This coil is normally located within the outdoor unit and consists of lots of cooling fins. It may accumulate debris and dirt. The best approach here is to call out a technician for a tune up.

AC Premature or Delayed Shut Off

When the AC shuts off before the room becomes comfortable or it goes on after the comfort level has been reached, chances are the thermostat is improperly placed. Also, the unit may be directly facing the sun or too close to a register or hot oven. The best way to fix this is by relocating the thermostat.

Other problems you should be on the lookout for include paddles of water next to your furnace, air coming out of your registers and the AC unit refusing to kick on.
