Strange Noises Your AC is Making and What They Mean

Whistling Noises

Whistling sounds are common in central AC units which have problematic seals. Rattling Sounds

With constant operation, the central air conditioning unit fasteners are bound to become loose. When this happens, the system starts producing rattling noises. As part of your troubleshooting exercise, you should check the cover plates and the screws or bolts that hold them in place. Tighten them and turn on your system to see whether the sound has stopped. If not, remove the cover and check the internal parts of the unit for the same problem.

Screeching Noises

These noises usually originate from the central air conditioning unit belts. As these belts start wearing out and stretch due to constant use, they produce screeching sounds. Just like any other part of the system, you need to remove the belts and replace them with new ones.

Banging Sounds

Banging sounds usually emanate from the compressor of your air conditioning unit to signal a loose fan blade constantly hitting other components in the system. The solution to this is to replace the worn- down fan blades before they cause destruction to other parts inside the unit.

Irregular Grinding Noises

When fan motors inside your unit start failing, grinding sounds become common and irregular. If you have any reason to suspect that your motor is faulty or aged, you should get in touch with a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) expert to inspect the unit for wear and tear.
